Preface
Article Outline
On behalf of the Asian Society of Transplantation and the organizing committee of the 7th Congress of the Asian Society of Transplantation held in New Delhi, India in March 2002 we present to you the Proceedings of the Congress.
The Incremental success of past conference proffers testimony to the growing importance of the Society. In line with the tradition, this congress has also provided a forum for transplant professionals from the region to learn the advances in the basic sciences and the technology of transplantation from each other as well from a distinguished international faculty. The published Proceedings reflect the quality of the deliberations and the original work presented at the meeting.
The Scientific Committee framed an outstanding program, which not only represents the most recent and seminal work in transplantation and its allied specialties but also addresses the specific needs of the region. The program focuses on the basic challenges to improving the quality of life after transplantation in an economically constrained society and also the ways and means to increase the yield of cadaveric organs. The issues of educating and updating the knowledge of participants were addressed through pre-conference courses on “The First Hundred Days of Transplantation”, “Training Course on Transplant Co-ordination” and a live workshop on “Live Donor Nephrectomy”.
These original reports, together with the state of art lectures reviewing critically important and emerging areas in transplantation, make this volume a valuable addition to your bookshelves, particularly for those members of The Society who were not able to personally attend the Congress. They will now have access to the useful information shared in New Delhi.
